Your files stay on your device
When you open a PDF, image or pattern, it is read and processed entirely inside your web browser. Rendering, scaling, ink saving and building the print PDF all happen on your computer. Your files, their names, and the measurements you enter are never uploaded to us or anyone else.
What the site stores in your browser
The app remembers your settings (units, paper size, margins, alignment-mark options and so on) in your browser’s local storage so they’re there next time. This stays on your device; we can’t see it. You can remove it at any time by clearing this site’s data in your browser settings.
We don’t use cookies.
Anonymous feature counts
To learn which features are useful, the app requests a tiny empty file from our server when you do certain things – for example /t/export.txt when you download a PDF or /t/paper-a4.txt for the paper size you printed on. The request contains only that event name. It does not include your file, its name, its contents or your measurements. We count these requests in aggregate.
The events are: opening a PDF, opening an image, loading the sample, calibrating, cropping, mirroring, using PDF layers, exporting (single page or all pages), exporting with the ink saver, and the paper size used.
Web-server access logs
Like almost every website, our hosting records a standard log line for each request it serves, including the feature-count requests above. A log line contains:
- the date and time, and the address requested (for example
/sewing/); - your IP address;
- your browser’s user-agent string (browser and operating system);
- the referring page, if your browser sends one;
- technical details such as response status, bytes transferred and which data centre served you.
We use these logs to count visits and feature use, to see which sites link to us, and to keep the service secure and working. Logs are kept for up to 180 days and then deleted automatically. We don’t sell them, share them with advertisers, or combine them with other data to identify you.
Who processes the data
The site is hosted on Amazon Web Services (Amazon CloudFront and Amazon S3), which serves the pages and stores the access logs on our behalf in the United States. The domain’s DNS is provided by Cloudflare, which resolves the site’s address but does not see page contents. We don’t use any other third-party services: no analytics companies, no advertising networks, no embedded fonts or scripts from other sites.
Legal basis and your rights
Where data-protection law such as the UK or EU GDPR applies, we process access-log data on the basis of our legitimate interest in running, securing and improving a free service. You can ask us to tell you about, or delete, log data relating to your IP address – email us with the IP address and approximate dates, as that is the only way log lines can be found. You also have the right to complain to your local data-protection authority.
Children
The site is a general-purpose tool and isn’t directed at children. We don’t knowingly collect information about children beyond the standard log data described above.
Changes
If we change how the site handles data, we’ll update this page and the date at the top.
